In early April 1938, the General Staff of the Republican Army ordered the construction of a series of fortified and parallel lines, “L”, to protect Catalonia from being occupied by Franco's forces. These lines were connected with the first line of battle on the left bank of the River Segre, by a network of military constructions supported with the irrigation channel of Urgell.
This area of Les Coves trenches was supported with the third drain of the channel of Urgell and the machine gun nest protecting the area between the Pla d’en Ramon and the Llacunes. And through this evacuation trench there was a connection with a light shelter, a place where material and military personnel could take cover from the weather and enemy action.
This defensive structure together with the Tossal Roig and other structures that no longer exist were active from April 1938 until January 1939, when in the face of the advancing forces of Franco; the republican forces had to withdraw from their positions towards the interior of Catalonia.
