Vilanova de la Barca. War and reconstruction
The military overthrow of the Republican government of Spain on 18 July 1936 represented the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. The standing army, led by General Franco, captured several provinces. Meanwhile, in Catalonia the uprising was contained. In April 1938, the war front developed along the Noguera Pallaresa, Segre and Ebro rivers. Thenceforth, Catalonia became isolated from Republican Spain.
